5 Tips to Consider when Creating Your Video Application

So, you think you’re the perfect candidate for the job. However, there is one component to the application process that you don’t know how to approach: a video application. Companies are starting to use this as their way of really getting a sense of an applicant’s personality and drive for a position. Instead of looking at it as daunting, look at it as the perfect way to show your potential employer how great you really are. We’ve put together a few tips for you to be on your way to making your video application stand out amongst the rest.

1. Strategize Your Video

Nothing screams disorganized more than just winging the video. Employers want to see that you’ve put some thought into your video application. It shows initiative and dedication. Take some time to plan your video – a script, what you want to shoot your video on, what type of video are you filming? Are you sitting in front of the camera? Are you acting out a scene where you are completing the required job description responsibilities? Are you being interviewed? etc.

2. Put Your Best Face Forward

Every aspect of your video will really show what kind of employee you can be. If you’re on camera, make sure you’re recording in a clean space. If you’re in your home, make sure that last night’s dinner plates aren’t sitting on the table behind you and that your laundry is picked up off the floor.

Don’t just restate your resume – they have that information. Instead, take the time to talk about how much the position with them would mean to you, or go into hobbies, interests, and personality traits that make you who you are. The things you can’t quite put on paper.

Have confidence in yourself. If you believe you’re the best candidate for the job, show them why beyond your credentials. Explain why getting this job means so much to you.

Employers love to encourage people to think outside of the box. For example, putting your application together into a rap, or dramatic monologue are two ideas. Making people laugh is one of the best ways to leave a lasting impression. If you’re not funny, well then use your imagination and do something creative with your video, the purpose of this is to have fun.

3. Shooting Quality Audio and Video

No employer expects you to have state-of-the-art video and audio equipment. However, you should be able to be heard and seen clearly. Most phones shoot in high quality now as well as have a great condenser microphone. Make sure you have the right lighting when shooting – keep the light source in front of you to avoid shadowing your face and shoot in the day where your camera can produce a better quality of video. Most importantly, you want people to hear you, it’s what you’re saying that matters most – so make sure to enunciate your words, add levels to your voice to avoid sounding monotone, and practice what you say before you say it.

4. Don’t Just Go with Your First Take

Nobody is perfect, so don’t expect your first take to be your best. Use it as a stepping stone – watch and listen and find ways to improve until you really feel like you’ve sold yourself. Sometimes there will be pieces that are great from a first take and better pieces in a second take, so make sure to utilize all your best content while editing.

5. Editing

Now keep in mind, your editing skills aren’t going to be harshly judged. But editing your video can make it stand out from others. There are plenty of free editing programs for you to use – chances are your computer already has one installed. So, play around with it, it could be fun to add your own artistic taste to it.

We can’t stress enough, that unless you’re directly applying for a video related job, that you’re not the next Spielberg. But taking these tips into consideration when creating your video application can help you make people believe you’re well-rounded and really put an effort into leaving a good impression.
